Centrifuge 5430 / 5430 R
Microcentrifuge with multipurpose capabilities Unique cross-over Centrifuge 5430 and 5430 R combine the best features of a microcentrifuge (small footprint) and multipurpose centrifuge (versatility) in one instrument.
The all-round 30 place air-cooled centrifuge 5430 and refrigerated 5430 R are incomparably versatile and fast! Both centrifuges offer a wide range of applications due to the extensive choice of 8 different rotors, thus offering unlimited compatibility. The 8 different rotors accommodate tubes from 0.2 mL – 1.5/2.0 mL tubes, 15 mL and 50 mL Falcon tubes, MTP plates and blood collection tubes.
The sophisticated and ideal structured operation panel is the result of an ergonomic survey. This combination of ergonomic control panel, programmable applications and rotor variety makes your daily routine lab work easier than ever and your unique application possible. The Centrifuge 5430 and 5430 R achieve a maximum g-force of over 30.000 × g.
Centrifuge 5430 R
The refrigerated Centrifuge 5430 R enlarges the applicational options and possibilities even further! Temperature sensitive samples can be centrifuged in a refrigerated environment, e.g. 4 °C at maximum speed.

The coated rotors are available for the Centrifuges 5424/ 5424 R and 5430/ 5430 R. The special coating provides an enhanced chemical resistance against phenol, acetonitrile, DMSO, acetone, trichloroacetic acid, acetic acid and sodium hypochlorite. It is a PTFE coating which is applied on top of the actual anodic coating.
Yes, in the event of a power failure, the unit can be opened by means of the rotor key. Before the centrifuge is opened, always remove the mains plug from the plug socket and wait for the rotor to come to a standstill. For the emergency release of the centrifuge lid, the small plastic caps on the left-hand and right-hand side of the Centrifuge 5430 have to be removed. Then insert the rotor key into the nut underneath the cap and open the lid latches by turning in anticlockwise direction.
The Centrifuge 5430/5430 R can be cleaned with neutral detergents. For disinfection, we recommend alcohol or alcoholic disinfectants. Make sure that the relevant legal requirements and directives are observed when choosing the disinfection method.
"EP" is displayed when the automatic standby function is active. It is not an error code. If the centrifuge remains unused for more than 20 min., the standby function is activated, indicated by "EP" on the display. By using the standby key, the centrifuge is re-activated and ready to use. The letters "EP" were chosen because a lot of Eppendorf products already have this prefix in their name.
The Centrifuge 5430/ 5430 R has got an automatic rotor recognition, so that a newly inserted rotor is recognized automatically as soon as a run is started. The maximum speed will be automatically limited for each rotor. This prevents overspeeding of the rotor.
The aerosol-tight standard fixed-angle rotor is made of massive, anodized aluminum. This material is durable and has got a very good chemical resistance due to the special coating. The aerosol-tight rotor lid is made of the same material.
Due to the different rotors and adapters, a wide variety of tubes and plates can be centrifuged with the Centrifuge 5430/ 5430 R:<br />• Micro test tubes (0.5 - 2.0 mL)<br />• PCR strips and 0.2 mL PCR tubes<br />• Spin columns<br />• Cryo tubes<br />• Conical tubes (15 mL and 50 mL)<br />• Blood collection tubes<br />• Oak Ridge Tubes (10 mL, 30 mL and 50 mL)<br />• PCR plates (96 and 384 well)<br />• Micro test plates<br />• Deepwell plates (up to 29 mm height)<br />• Slides
The Centrifuge 5430 can be operated at an ambient temperature in the range from 4° C to 40° C. Operation in the cooling room at a temperature of down to 4° C is therefore possible. The permitted range of the ambient temperature is between 10 °C and 40 °C for the Centrifuge 5430 R, so that this centrifuge may not be operated in a cooling room at 4 °C.
The specifications of the tube manufacturers on the centrifugation resistance must generally be taken into consideration for the centrifugation of tubes of all kinds. This applies in particular for centrifugation at 30,000 x g, as only very few micro test tubes can withstand these extreme gravitational forces to date without breaking. The following tubes can, for example, be centrifuged at 30,000 x g:<br />• Eppendorf Safe-Lock Tubes 0.5 mL <br />• Eppendorf Safe-Lock Tubes 1.5 mL<br />• Eppendorf Tubes 3810X 1.5 mL
Following the end of a centrifuge run, only the lid of the Centrifuge 5430 is automatically opened in order to provide quicker access to the sample and to avoid potential heat accumulation. When working with radioactive material, this function should be deactivated in the device menu and the centrifuge lid manually opened upon conclusion of the centrifugation run. The Centrifuge 5430 R does not come equipped with the option of automatic or manual opening of the centrifuge lid. In order to maintain a consistent temperature in the rotor chamber and in the sample, the centrifuge lid for this device must always be manually opened by pressing the "open" key.
The "Fast Temp" function is a temperature control run of the Centrifuge 5430 R without samples and with a rotor and temperature-specific rotational speed in order to quickly bring the rotor chamber, incl. the rotor, buckets and adapters, to the set nominal temperature. In order that the samples can be centrifuged from the beginning on at the desired temperature, one starts this temperature control run during sample preparation by pressing the "Fast Temp" key. In addition to the current temperature and the g-count (rcf) / rotational speed, the remaining duration of the temperature control run also appears in the display, so that one can more precisely plan the subsequent workflow. You can find a more detailed description in the operating instructions of the Centrifuge 5430/5430 R.
With the "Fast Temp pro" function it is possible to automatically start the "Fast Temp" temperature control run at a predetermined time. In order that the Centrifuge 5430 R already shows the desired temperature at the start of work, one can set a point in time in the device menu at which the temperature control run should be started. The rotor then begins to spin in the centrifuge at a rotor and temperature-specific rotational speed in order to quickly reach the set nominal temperature. This function can thereby be programmed in such a way that it is carried out once or several times. You can find a more detailed description in the operating instructions of the Centrifuge 5430/5430 R.
The continuous cooling starts with each rotor standstill of the Centrifuge 5430 R in order to maintain the preselected nominal temperature of the rotor chamber not only during centrifugation. To this purpose the following prerequisites must be met:<br />- The centrifuge is switched on.<br />- The centrifuge lid is closed.<br />- The nominal temperature is lower than the ambient temperature.<br />- The centrifuge is not in standby mode.<br />Continuous cooling is ended by opening the centrifuge lid or by pressing the standby key.
The lowest temperature of the Centrifuge 5430 R is -11 °C. The device is thereby optimized with all rotors in such a way that at least 4 °C is maintained with all rotors at the appropriate maximum speeds.
When working with nucleic acid purification kits with spin columns by certain manufacturers, sometimes tube lids cannot be closed any more. This means you have to centrifuge with open tube lids. These tube lids might rip off during the stress of centrifugation and might damage the centrifuge. In order to prevent this, the kit rotor with the raised rotor rim was designed. Open tube lids, supported against the rim, will not rip off during centrifugation. Another feature of this rotor is the enlarged distance between the rotor bores. The enlarged distance between the bores offers a very convenient handling when loading / unloading the rotor. Especially when working with long spin columns (e. g. from Princeton Separations) you will need a larger distance between the bores to load the rotor fully and make use of the complete rotor capacity.
